Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POSITIVE OUTCOMES OF BEING A HOBY ALUMNUS?
A: The following is a summary of what HOBY Alumni have shared:

  • Improved critical thinking skills. By presenting multiple viewpoints on important issues, HOBY encourages participants to evaluate all issues from a critical perspective. Effective leaders make informed decisions.
  • Enhanced leadership skills. HOBY’s phase-based curriculum, question-and-answer sessions with community leaders, small group discussions, interactive activities, hands-on service-learning experiences, and opportunities to engage in leadership roles enable participants to better understand leadership and begin to identify their own particular leadership strengths.
  • Developing goal-setting skills. All aspects of the HOBY Leadership Seminar are geared to encourage participants to see leadership as a life-goal worth pursuing. At the conclusion of the HOBY Leadership Seminar, participants are encouraged to identify personal goals and commit to achieving one or more within the six months that follow.
  • Realizing the importance of leadership. Through HOBY’s Leadership for Service program, participants are challenged to complete 100 hours of volunteer service in our communities and to create service opportunities for others.

Q: WHAT ARE THE TOP 5 SIGNS THAT YOU ARE ONE OF HOBY’S ALUMNI?
A: The following are some signs:

  • You could wear a HOBY t-shirt every day for two weeks without doing laundry

  • Service is a way of life for you
  • You are a leader!

Q: WHAT IS LEADERSHIP FOR SERVICE (L4S)?
A: It is a national community service program, which allows Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Ambassadors to track and measure their commitment to Leadership for Service (L4S). The program is changing their lives and enhancing the quality of life in their communities daily! HOBY ALUMNI participate annually in L4S, which is specifically designed to raise the public’s awareness of young people as a resource for community problemosolving, prepare young people to take on meaningful roles in community problem-solving, and develop the capacity of individuals, organizations, and institutions to provide meaningful service and leadership opportunities for youth.

HOBY achieves these goals by challenging each ambassador who attends a local HOBY Leadership Seminar to complete 100 hours of community service. To help them successfully meet that challenge, HOBY has designed innovative website and certification process utilizing state-of-the-art interactive technology. As of February 2013, HOBY International has certified the following community service hours and the community dollars that are saved annually as a direct result of HOBY ALUMNI SERVICE PROJECTS:

Total Leadership for Service volunteer hours logged by HOBY Alumni: 2,728,759!!!
Independent Sector estimates the value of volunteer time at $21.79 per hour.
Which means that HOBY’s economic impact on communities is: $59,459,659!!!

The key to the certification program is the interactive web site: www.HOBY.org, which has been completely redesigned to be used to reach out to, communicate with, motivate, and certify service hours. on the web site, students register their service projects and record their hours. HOBY certifies their service hours, recognizes them on the completion of their commitments and rewards their efforts.

Q: WHAT IS HOBY ONE©?
A: The HOBY ONE Scholarship Fund was initiated at the SC HOBY Seminar the summer of 2011! HOBY ONE© is the brain child of a SC HOBY Corporate Board Member, Mr. Tommy Stines, President of SEU Promotions. Mr. Stines suggested that a general SC HOBY scholarship support club be formed to provide scholarships to deserving sophomores who wanted to attend the SC HOBY Leadership Seminar. This would allow SC HOBY to reach more sophomores across the state, and allow us to empower, lead, and enriching their leadership skills to subsequently give back to the local community. “It was a win-win recommendation, and took off with great support!”

In June 2012, HOBY ONE© was formed, and over 60 SC HOBY Alumni made the decision to support the effort, providing over $1500.00 of scholarship support! Each individual joining would pay $25.00 per year to join.   “We were off the ground and running, providing over 10 sophomores the opportunity to participate in HOBY Leadership Development Seminars in South Carolina!”

HOBY ONE© members are placed on a preferential list to be selected as a Team Alumni staff member to help at SC HOBY 2016, and would be given a $25 credit toward the $165 Team Alumni registration fee!

Any members joining for the 2015 year (now open for registration), will receive the following:

  • HOBY ONE© Membership Card, showing membership into SC HOBY’s Scholarship Support group,
  • HOBY ONE© T-Shirt,
  • $25 credit to the registration fee to be a SC HOBY 2016 Volunteer or JFAC,
